Arthritis is derived from the Greek words artho, meaning joints and itis, meaning inflammation. The name of the disease is actually derived from the symptoms that are often associated with it which includes inflammation of joints sometimes leading to injuries which affect the normal movement of the infected joints. It is often associated with severe pain and physical discomfort.

Arthritis is very common among the people who are above 65 years. They suffer from immense pain and sometimes even loss of joints, while western medicine treatment aims at just managing the pain and hoping for the best. If we look outside the box, there might actually be an alternative treatment, like the traditional Chinese medicine which identifies the ailment as the symptom that it really is and it not only aims at managing the pain but also works towards a cure plan.

Now, most of the doctors who practice western medicine do not support the traditional medicine system’s search for the cause and finding a cure for it, however they do agree on the fact that the treatment provided is quite effective. Some of them even suggest their patients who are suffering from chronic arthritis, to undergo this treatment as a part of their comprehensive treatment plan which includes treatment offered by different disciplines of medicine.

The traditional medicine system recommends their patients to undergo acupuncture to manage their pain. This process is so helpful that a recent study showed that there was considerable reduction in pain, as much as 44% and also it registered a 40% increase in joint mobility. The study was conducted by the National Institute of Health which included around 570 patients who were diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis. Most of them belonged to the age group of 50+. The groups of patients were divided into 3 different groups. First set of people received placebo treatment. The second group followed the treatment regime that they were following until then and relied on self help and the third group was given the actual traditional Chinese medical procedure which is suggested for arthritis.

The results of this study had a great impact in the healthcare industry. Now, more number of insurance companies suggests their patients to go for acupuncture which is covered by heir insurance.
