Arthritis – a difficult to treat disease
Exercises are more and more recommended by the doctors for the treatment of arthritis and are specially created for every kind of arthritis. These exercises must be accompanied by a proper medication, a healthy diet, rest and relaxation; they are designed to make the articulation more flexible, make the bones and muscles stronger and to increase the level of energy. The pain will be reduced that way, the heart and the weight – controlled and the people with arthritis will be able to live and work almost normally.
The kinds of program that is appropriated for one person must be decided by the doctor who is capable to determine what exercises are the most effective depending on the type of arthritis.
The exercises are divided into three main categories. The first category, strengthening exercises are based on isometric and isotonic motion. Isometric exercises make the muscle stronger without solicitation of the articulations; isotonic exercises include also the articulations. These exercises work the muscles to provide support to the damaged articulations enabling the patient to move and relieving his pain. They are recommended daily.
The second type of exercises is represented by the range of motion, which is the easiest category. They involve wide motion of the articulations in all directions and they suit al types of arthritis, because they are effective in preventing rigidity. These exercises should also be performed daily and their number and intensity – gradually increased. One such exercise is dancing.
Endurance exercises are the last and more difficult type of the three. They improve the cardiovascular activity by a 25 minutes increase of the heartbeat rate. This type is not appropriate for any form of arthritis. Endurance exercises include walking, bicycling or swimming, as most popular types, because they are not soliciting for the articulations. They are recommended three times a week
Any daily activity may become an exercise for arthritis, by making the rigidity of your articulation go away. Ample movements are very helpful and so are indoor activities. Even walking instead of driving is a good step forward.
Only an experienced doctor can recommend you the type of exercises for arthritis that suits you and your condition. There are exercises for swollen articulations, others for the muscles and they even divide into different kinds for each articulation. The exercises should be started on an easy level and then difficulty may be increased. The patient shouldn't forget to warm up before starting and relax after the exercises are done
There are although cases in which exercises increase the discomfort of certain people by generating a state of weakness, tiredness, worse inflammation of the articulations that persist over one hour. And easier type of exercises is the solution for these cases.
